Postdoctoral Positions in Environmental Epidemiology, Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, Massachusetts, USA

There are two openings for postdoctoral research positions in the Department of Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health. The areas of research include:

  • An epigenomic study looking for signatures in a genome wide methylation scan in a longitudinal cohort of exposure to traffic particles, lead, mercury, cadmium and arsenic. This study will also examine associations with intermediary markers of heart and lung disease;
  • Examining physiologic changes and intermediary biomarkers of heart and lung disease associated with changes in weather patterns to help understand the expected effects of climate change;
  • Examining temperature mortality associations in a large number of locations for many years to see if models can be developed predicting the differences in slopes across locations and across time, allowing reasonable predictions of effects of future climate scenarios;
  • Examining mechanisms of air pollution's effects on markers of heart and lung disease using genetic polymorphisms and epigenetic changes along pathways.

Spatio-temporal exposure modeling will be incorporated in all of the studies.

Successful candidates will join a group of epidemiologists, exposure modelers, biostatisticians and bioinformaticians who are involved in many other related studies, and interact regularly, with additional opportunities for research. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Epidemiology or a related field (e.g. biostatistics, environmental health), good background in epidemiology and sophisticated analytic skills. Written and verbal fluency in English is required. Applicants should have the ability to work independently and in group settings. Programming skills in either SAS or R is required, and knowledge of both would be a plus.

The postdoctoral fellows will be advised by and will work closely with Dr. Joel Schwartz. The position is initially for one year, with the possibility of extension to an additional year upon mutual agreement. The start date is flexible, between Fall 2011 and Summer 2012.

To apply, please submit a cover letter, Curriculum Vitae, two letters of reference, and up to two representative publications (as one file) to Joel Schwartz at the below address.
