Regional Chapters and Local Groups
ISEE members have set up local groups in a number of regions, and where they are large enough they can be formally recognized as ISEE regional chapters. ISEE encourages the formation of these regional groups to provide a regional network of scientists involved in environmental epidemiology and to provide a way for potential members to join ISEE. You can contact the Secretariat for guidance on how to do this. Currently ISEE has local groups and chapters in the following areas. To find out about their activities, contact the local representatives listed for each.

Caucasus
The ISEE Caucasus Chapter was formed in 2001. The chapter has received two grants from the Open Society Institute (OSI) Assistance Foundation/Azerbaijan Public Health/Medical Program. In 2002-2003 the chapter translated the WHO textbook Environmental Epidemiology: Textbook on Study Methods and Public Health Applications into Azeri and organized two trainings. The project was supported by OSI-Azerbaijan in collaboration with WHO/Azerbaijan and Khazar University. The translated textbooks were distributed to training and round-table participants and to various organizations' libraries. The translated book is the first textbook on epidemiology in Azeri; the last Azeri book on epidemiology was published in 1954.
In 2004 the Chapter translated and published three WHO editions in Azeri: Cancer Pain Relief and Palliative Care; Cancer Pain Relief and Palliative Care in Children, and Safe Abortion: Technical and Policy Guidance for Health Systems.. The books were provided to the Ministry of Health of Azerbaijan. The Director-General of the World Health Organization granted translation rights for these editions in the Azeri language to the Caucasus Chapter.
The Chair has been involved in developing a module and organization of courses in Modern Epidemiology in the new School of Public Health in Azerbaijan. In 2004 the British Medical Association/British Medical Journal (BMA/BMJ) Information Fund provided books to the ISEE Caucasus chapter to establish a medical library, which is temporarily housed in the Khazar University. The Chapter invites ISEE members and others to send journals and books as gifts to enlarge the Caucasus chapter library.

Latin America and the Caribbean
See Chapter Report, September 2000
The Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) Chapter was organized in 1991 with the mission of congregating Latin-American investigators who are members of ISEE. It was the joint effort of the Chapter that promoted the annual meeting of the ISEE in 1992 in Cuernavaca, Mexico, as well as other activities in the region.
The main aims of the LAC Chapter are to identify individuals and groups working in environmental health in the region; to facilitate transfer of information and communications between environmental epidemiologists in the region; to facilitate the establishment of collaborative networks among the different centers in the region; and to interact with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) in order to contact and support academic and governmental institutions to establish an agenda of training in specific methodologies.

South Asia
The South Asian Regional Chapter of the ISEE was officially formed by epidemiologists from across South Asia, meeting at the Better Air Quality conference in Agra on December 6, 2004. Initial support for chapter formation was provided by the Health Effects Institute's Public Health and Air Pollution in Asia (PAPA) program as part of its regional capacity-building efforts.
The founding members are committed to work on a range of environmental risk factors in addition to outdoor air pollution, including indoor air pollution, arsenic in drinking water, and lack of clean water and sanitation. The chapter will facilitate the building of a strong network of professionals from across the region , enabling them to draw on international support and take the lead in the region to tackle these issues. A key priority will be to establish a strong network of regional members and strengthen the linkages with the current ISEE membership. Plans include organizing a symposium at the 2005 ISEE annual conference, expanding to a joint ISEE/ISEA regional chapter, creating a message board for employment and capacity-building/training opportunities, and organizing a regional conference. Chapter members are currently compiling a review of the health risks of natural disasters for health care workers in tsunami-affected areas.
