About ISEE Committees
ISEE members are encouraged to participate in the ongoing activities of the
Society by participating in one or more committees. Some standing committees,
such as the Nominations Committee, support the Society's ongoing functions.
The chairs and members of these committees are appointed by the Officers.
Other committees have been formed by Society members to provide a forum for
their mutual interests. These committees are proposed by interested Society
members and approved by the Executive Council. Some of these special interest
committees, such as the Ethics and Philosophy Committee, are among the Society's
most active committees. The ISEE Executive Council meets monthly, usually
by telephone conference, and committee chairs participate in some of these
meetings to report on activities of the committees. Currently the Society
has eight committees. The committees are constituted in one of three forms:
- Nominations Committee, Annual
Conference Committee, Awards Committee:
These three committees support essential, ongoing functions of the Society.
The committees have specific responsibilities with appointed memberships.
The chairs and members are appointed by the Officers in consultation with
the Executive Council. Please contact the Committee Chair or Secretariat
if you are interested in serving on one of these committees.
- Membership Committee, Communications
Committee: These two committees have been established
by the Executive Council to enhance the Society's objectives through outreach
and communication. The chair is appointed by the Officers in consultation
with the Executive Council. Society members are encouraged to serve on these
committees if they wish.
- Ethics and Philosophy Committee, Capacity
Building in Developing Countries: These two committees
have been formed by members of the Society to provide a forum for their
mutual interests and to enhance the Society's objectives. A proposed committee
must be approved by the Executive Council. The Chair is selected by the
committee's members and approved by the Executive Council. Membership is
open to all Society members. The mission and activities of the committees
are reviewed periodically by the Executive Council.
Other special interest committees may be formed by Society members with the approval of the Executive Council.
Descriptions and a person to contact about each committee follow.

The Ethics and Philosophy Committee is a volunteer group which has been active since the early 1990s. The Committee formulated one of the first epidemiological codes of ethics and has come to the aid of colleagues who have been attacked for demonstrating epidemiological associations which proved problematical to powerful stakeholders. Committee members exchange ideas at meetings and over the internet.
Capacity Building in Developing Countries
Chair: Richard Clapp; rclapp@bu.edu
Fax: 617-638-4857
This committee encourages and facilitates collaborative work between ISEE members in developing and developed countries. The Committee sponsors sessions at annual ISEE meetings and puts on environmental epidemiology workshops at meetings of other epidemiological organizations. It also supports training of members from developing countries and development of regional chapters or local groups. Committee members communicate and plan activities electronically and at annual meetings. A recently introduced program, ISEE AuthorAID, offers members from developing countries a way to request mentoring and receive help in getting their research published.
