Karolinska Institutet (KI) is one of the leading medical universities in Europe. Through research, education and information, KI contributes to improving human health. Each year, the Nobel Assembly at KI awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Two postdoctoral positions are available immediately at the Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM), a department within KI. IMM performs world-class research in epidemiology, physiology and toxicology. Epidemiology is focused on environmental exposures, lifestyle, nutrition and outcomes such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and
inflammatory diseases employing state-of-the-art approaches such as gene-environment interactions and exposure modelling, and housing large cohort and case-control materials and biobanks.

Successful candidates should have a PhD degree in epidemiology or biostatistics awarded within the past five years, and must be fluent in English. A strong publication record is preferred and documented methodological skills within epidemiology or biostatistics are

Research position in Air Pollution Epidemiology, Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology, Barcelona, Spain

The Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL) in Barcelona, Spain, is opening a tenure track position at the level of junior or senior researcher in air pollution epidemiology.

CREAL conducts advanced epidemiologic research on the environmental determinants of human health and its interaction with genetic and other co-factors. The CREAL air pollution research takes a leading role in several local and cross-European projects and consortia, with a particular focus on the chronic effects (respiratory, cardiovascular and fetal and child health) of pollution, and the exogenous and endogenous determinants of environmental susceptibility.

The candidate will have the opportunity to develop an independent new air pollution research agenda fostering interdisciplinary collaborations within CREAL as well as with its local and international partners.

Applications are invited from dynamic researchers with a solid background in air pollution epidemiology and epidemiological methods. Interest in policy relevant research, novel health outcomes of air pollution, or the biologic underpinnings of effects including genetics are an asset of candidates. Excellent knowledge of English is required.

CREAL is a joint initiative of the Government of Catalonia, the Municipal Institute of Medical Research (IMIM) and the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF). CREAL incorporates 13 researchers and a staff of around 80 including postdoctoral and predoctoral researchers, technical assistants and administrative personnel (www.creal.cat/).

Supervisory Health Scientist or Supervisory Medical Officer, U.S. EPA, Research Triangle Park, NC

The U.S. EPA’s National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory (NHEERL) in Research Triangle Park, NC, is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Supervisory Health Scientist or Supervisory Medical Officer. This career opportunity serves as Chief of the Epidemiology and Biomarkers Branch (EBB) within the Human Studies Division (HSD), located on the medical campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  HSD maintains a Medical Station staffed and equipped to conduct physical examinations and medical procedures.  The primary mission of EBB is to characterize exposure-dose-response relationships to environmental pollutants among the general population and special susceptible populations (e.g. children, elderly).  Epidemiology is applied to a range of environmentally-related health effects, with an emphasis on using molecular and cellular events that occur in humans to study relationships between pollutant exposure and health effects.  Research is conducted to describe, explain, evaluate and predict environmental health outcomes related to such exposures in both observational and experimental settings. 

As Chief of the Epidemiology and Biomarkers Branch, the incumbent is responsible for leading and managing a broad-scale research program in environmental epidemiology and human biomarkers.  In addition, the Medical Officer position would share, with other staff physicians, in the responsibility of conducting subject physicals and serving as duty doctor for the Medical Station.  The Health Scientist position has a basic educational requirement.  The Medical Officer position has a medical licensure and a basic educational requirement.  Please visit www.epa.gov/nheerl for more information on the Laboratory in which this position is located.

Epidemiologist, Epidemiology International, Owings Mills, MD

Epidemiology International (EI) is looking for an Epidemiologist with an MPH or MS from an accredited university to work as part of a small technical team providing research and consultative services to a range of clients, including the legal profession, the biotech and pharmaceutical industry, academia, and federal agencies.  This full-time position is located on-site at our headquarters in Owings Mills, MD.   The successful candidate can start immediately.

Job Summary:
Scientist with strong methodological and analytical skills who provides technical support in the design and implementation of selected EI research and consulting endeavors.

General Responsibilities:
In conjunction with PhD-level epidemiologists, design, plan, and execute research projects. 
Perform critical, systematic reviews of the literature and prepare critical summaries.
Analyze and interpret data, write reports, and develop presentations.
Assist in development of research protocols and standard operating procedures, with guidance from PhD-level epidemiologists.
Analyze data and write reports for scientific publication; prepare presentations for scientific meetings.
Assume responsibility for project tasks.
Assist with bid preparation and proposal development.
Provide support in additional areas of EI business, as needed.

Abilities/skills:
Strong background in public health, particularly epidemiologic methods.
Knowledge of statistical software packages such as Stata, SPSS, SAS, etc.
Proficiency in commonly used office computing software and reference management software.
Highly motivated, independent worker with enthusiasm for public health research.
Ability to work independently as well as effectively communicate and collaborate in a team environment.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to adjust to changing priorities and to work in teams.
Strong organization and analytic skills.
Outstanding attention to detail.
Flexible, resourceful, willing to help wherever needed.

The successful candidate must:
Be a strong methodologist

The Department of Environmental Health at the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) seeks candidates for the position of assistant or associate professor of Aquatic Science in its Water and Health Program.  This is a tenure-ladder position, with the academic rank to be determined in accordance with the successful candidate’s experience and productivity.

We seek an outstanding individual to join the Environmental Health faculty to conduct teaching and research in the area of biological/chemical stressors in aquatic systems within a risk and decision analysis framework which addresses environmental health issues.  Applicants from a wide range of disciplines are encouraged to apply especially those candidates with expertise in environmental microbiology, i.e. research on the development and application of emerging molecular techniques.  The successful candidate will have a record of independent research as well a demonstration of collaborative research. Assistant Professor in Environmental Health Sciences, UMASS-Amherst, Amherst, MA

Assistant Professor in Environmental Health Sciences Full-time (9-month) Tenure Track Position

The University of Massachusetts Amherst, School of Public Health and Health Sciences (www.umass.edu/sphhs/), is seeking applicants for 2 tenure track state funded positions in Environmental Health Sciences at the Assistant Professor level.

Position:  The successful applicants will join a growing graduate program and faculty in Environmental Health Sciences.  Current areas of faculty research in the program include human exposure assessment and biomarkers, health effects of persistent organic pollutants, dose-response modeling, assessment/remediation of chemical contamination in soils and sediments, and the health effects of bioaerosol exposures.

Principal responsibilities will include developing and teaching graduate and/or undergraduate courses in environmental health sciences, advising graduate students enrolled in MS, MPH and PhD programs, University service, and scholarly research.  Candidates will be expected to develop their own areas of research specialization to complement the existing program, obtain competitive research funding, and engage in collaborative research with faculty from the School of Public Health and Health Sciences, other departments on campus, the University’s Medical School, and Baystate Medical Center.

The University of Massachusetts Amherst is located in the scenic Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts, which is home to five colleges (Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, and UMass Amherst) with easy access to several major metropolitan areas.

Postdoctoral research positions are available immediately at the Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute (EOHSI), a joint Institute of UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and of Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey

Successful candidates will have a doctorate in epidemiology, a related field, or medicine with epidemiological training. Specific projects include the relationship of shift work to cancer biomarkers, including a related clinical trial, identification and evaluation of environmental risk factors for adverse birth outcomes, study design and analysis using routinely collected surveillance data, and spatial epidemiology.

Environmental Epidemiologist Tenure-track position, Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA

Environmental Epidemiologist - Tenure-track Assistant or Associate Level Faculty Position

Candidates should have a doctoral degree in epidemiology or environmental health sciences and have research interests that include the area of environmental exposure and children’s neurodevelopmental outcomes.  Interest/experience in autism research a plus.  The position will involve scholarship through externally funded research as well as teaching and academic advising in the School’s masters and doctoral degree programs.  The School also maintains a commitment to public health service and encourages faculty involvement in service areas.  A publication record in children’s environmental health and relevant graduate-level teaching experience are desired but junior faculty applicants will be gauged on their scholarly potential. 

The Drexel University School of Public Health is the only accredited school of public health in Philadelphia, is in the midst of a period of growth, and has identified children’s health as an area of research emphasis.  Collaborative opportunities exist with faculty from the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Department of Environmental and Occupational Health, as well as the Department of Community Health and Prevention.   Existing active research areas include autism, residential exposure assessment, failure-to-thrive, GIS and spatial statistics, and systems models.
