Purpose: The Harvard University Center for the Environment created the Environmental Fellows program to enable recent doctorate recipients to use and expand Harvard's extraordinary resources to tackle complex environmental problems. The Environmental Fellows work for two years with Harvard faculty members in any school or department to create new knowledge while also strengthening connections across the University's academic disciplines. Environmental Fellows may include people with degrees in the sciences, social sciences, law, government, public policy, public health, medicine, design, and the full array of humanities.
The award: The fellowship will provide an annual stipend of $55,000 plus health insurance, a $2,500 allowance for travel and professional expenses, and other employee benefits. Environmental Fellows will begin work in September 2011.

Cancer Research Training Award Fellow for Environmental Epidemiology, National Cancer Institute, Rockville, Maryland USA
The Epidemiology and Genetics Research Program (EGRP), Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS), National Cancer Institute (NCI), anticipates an opening in 2010 for a Cancer Research Training Award (CRTA) Fellow with an interest in environmental epidemiology. The CRTA provides an outstanding opportunity for an individual with a strong interest in cancer epidemiology, environmental health sciences, and public health. NCI is a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to interact with recognized scientists in the field of environmental health, cancer epidemiology, genetics, public health and communications. The successful candidate may also have the opportunity to collaborate with active researchers in this arena leading to a potential publication. The position requires skills in project management, interpersonal communication, public health, and environmental cancer epidemiology and will involve collaboration and interaction with administrative staff and researchers at NIH and other academic and research institutions.
Position Description: The successful candidate will help coordinate and manage highly visible projects including the Program-level activities for existing trans-NIH research projects and initiatives such as the Breast Cancer and the Environment Research Program (BCERP), the Climate Change and Global Health Initiative, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences/NIH follow-up meeting and workshop on Environmental Exposures and Cancer. Duties include project scheduling, creating timelines, assigning tasks and roles, and communication among team members. Additional duties include developing scientific reports and briefing materials for NIH leadership and attending relevant seminars and workshops. In accomplishing these activities the successful candidate will meet frequently and work closely with the EGRP Environment and Cancer Coordinating Committee.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of a B.S. in environmental health or related field.
- A strong interest in public health, population-based research, and cancer control.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, planning, writing, and project management skills.
- The ability to work independently and on teams.
- Data management skills and/or experience with spreadsheets.

The Channing Laboratory at the Harvard Medical School and Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston is seeking applicants for a post-doctoral position in environmental epidemiology. The qualified applicant will have the opportunity to participate in the design and analysis of studies on the adverse effects of air pollution. Opportunities include work with a large multidisciplinary team of researchers and access to rich longitudinal datasets including the Nurses’ Health Study and the Trucking Industry Particle Study. Research activities include, but are not limited to the following areas:
- Chronic exposure to air pollution and its constituents and the risk of cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and all-cause mortality
- Development of novel spatio-temporal models of nationwide levels of air pollution
- Biomarkers of cardiovascular disease risk, oxidative stress and diesel exhaust exposure

Qualifications: Assistant or Associate Professor with a doctorate degree in epidemiology, biostatistics, or a closely related field. Public health employment experience in epidemiology is desirable but not mandatory. A strong record of scholarship and application of quantitative skills to public health problems is preferred. Experience interacting or working with diverse populations (e.g. racial/ethnic, cultural, persons with disabilities, etc.) and interest in performing research or service among these populations is also desirable.

Senior Environmental Research Scientist, Westat, Rockville, MD, USA

This individual will be based primarily onsite at NCI, in a full-time or part-time capacity, as part of interdisciplinary research teams, and will provide guidance to resident postdoctoral staff and to a GIS specialist. Postdoctoral Position in Air Pollution and Pregnancy Outcomes, Yale University, New Haven, CT, USA
Applications are invited for a post-doctoral position at Yale University to work on an NIH-funded research project investigating how exposure to ambient air pollution during pregnancy affects risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes (e.g., birth weight, pre-term delivery). The postdoctoral appointment will be joint between the School of Public Health and the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. Research will include statistical analysis of data on pregnancies, weather, and air pollution, and may involve application of alternate exposure methods, such as land-use regression modeling or satellite imagery.
Applicants should have knowledge of epidemiology and biostatistics and must have a Ph.D. in a related field (e.g., Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Environmental Health Sciences). Applicants should have experience with statistical analysis of large datasets for epidemiological studies. Experience with air pollution, pregnancy outcomes, and/or exposure estimation is preferred. Knowledge of R or SAS is required; knowledge of both is preferred. Written and verbal fluency in English is required. Applicants should have the ability to work independently and in group settings.
The postdoctoral fellow will be co-advised by Dr. Michelle Bell and Dr. Kathleen Belanger. The position is initially for one year, with the possibility of extension to an additional year upon mutual agreement. The start date is flexible between Summer-Fall 2010.

Brown Superfund Research Program, Environmental Health State Agencies Liaison, Brown University, Providence, RI, USA
The Brown University Superfund Research Program (SRP) has two key objectives for this position; 1) ensuring that the results of basic research are readily and understandably available to key constituents of the Rhode Island community, and 2) to use available databases and resources to expand the scope and relevance of environmental health research within Rhode Island. Among the key stakeholders in the state are the RI Department of Health (RIDOH), the RI Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM), the local medical community, various community groups and, on the federal level, the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, any or all of whom might be involved with health issues related to contaminated sites.
To ensure that there is effective communication and research collaboration between these groups and the SRP, Brown is seeking an Environmental Health State Agencies Liaison (SAL) to coordinate these efforts. This individual would inform the SRP team members of current issues of interest to the various state agencies and local community groups. At the same time, this individual would arrange for effective and timely communication to the state agencies and local groups, of the best scientific understanding of the various contaminated site issues being studied by the SRP, other leading researchers, and environmental health organizations. The SAL would also be expected to coordinate cooperative scientific efforts that take advantage of databases and resources available to the state agency – academic – community partners. This includes seeking additional funding opportunities for the SRP and its partners.
The SAL would hold a title at Brown University determined by qualifications (e.g., research associate, postdoctoral research associate). This is a full-time position and will carry salary commensurate with qualifications and consistent with those for recent advanced degree graduates. Health and dental benefits will also be part of the compensation package. Initial appointment is for one year, and is renewable.
The appropriate candidate for the SAL position should have a strong background in environmental health science with an advanced degree (masters or doctorate) in a relevant field. Familiarity with regulatory issues, and experience working in community partnership are a plus. It is expected that the successful applicant will be able to work with a high degree of independence facilitating expanded communication and research capacity among the state agency – academic – community partners.

The University of Texas School of Public Health (UTSPH) is seeking an energetic leader to become Director of the Division of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences (EOHS). The program in EOHS has over 35 years of excellence in teaching and research. Postdoctoral position at University of California, Davis, and the M.I.N.D. Institute (Medical Investigations of Neurodevelopmental Disorders)
Two-year position, beginning Oct 1, 2009, through Sept 30, 2011.
Job title: Post-graduate researcher in epidemiology. Salary commensurate with experience.
Primary responsibilities are to conduct analyses and write manuscripts using data collected in the CHARGE (CHildhood Autism Risks from Genetics and the Environment) Study, a comprehensive population-based case-control investigation that has enrolled over 1200 children from three groups (autism, developmental delay without autism, and general population controls). CHARGE is the first large-scale study of autism to be focused on environmental factors and in which cases have been confirmed using research-reliable instruments. Data available include: extensive environmental information collected by retrospective interviews; medical records from the prenatal, labor & delivery, and postnatal periods; diagnostic psychometric assessments for autism, and for cognitive, adaptive, and aberrant behaviors; other questionnaires related to co-morbidities and language development; and genetic, immunologic, environmental and other measurements from blood, urine, etc.
Besides joining the highly productive multi-disciplinary research team involved in the CHARGE study, the post-doc will also be exposed to the vast intellectual and clinical resources of the M.I.N.D. Institute, the Center for Children's Environmental Health, and numerous other UC Davis strengths, such as the Program in International Nutrition, Center for Health and the Environment, Center for Occupational and Environmental Health, Air Quality Center, etc.

Post-Doctoral Positions in Environmental Epidemiology and Exposure Assessment, University of Southern California
The Department of Preventive Medicine at the University of Southern California invites applications for three postdoctoral positions in environmental epidemiology and exposure assessment. These recruitments are part of a larger faculty recruitment initiative expanding the mission of the Department of Preventive Medicine under a new chairman (Jonathan Samet). Central to the fellowship training is mentored work designed to foster skills leading to a career as an independent investigator. Activities include development of grant proposals, research planning, design, conduct, data analyses, and dissemination of scientific results of biologically-based, population-level studies investigating environmental determinants of chronic diseases. The department has a leading research group in environmental epidemiology and biostatistics, with an active and well-funded program in environmental health effects research, cancer epidemiology and methodological research focused on environmental and genetic epidemiology. Effects of air pollution on children are a major focus of the environmental health group within the department. Current interests include chronic respiratory, neuro and cardiovascular outcomes, exposure assessment and biological markers, epigenetics and gene-environment interactions. A dynamic and diverse group of investigators in the Southern California Environmental Health Sciences Center also offers opportunities for a wide range of research collaborations with investigators at UCLA and other southern California institutions. Opportunities exist for teaching of graduate students.
Applicants must have a doctoral degree, or near completion, in epidemiology, biostatistics, exposure assessment or environmental health sciences, or a related field. Alternatively, applicants may hold a M.D. degree with experience or academic training in quantitative research (e.g., masters degree in epidemiology or biostatistics). U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is NOT required.

Research Position in Air Pollution Epidemiology, Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology, Barcelona, Spain
The Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL) in Barcelona, Spain, is opening a tenure track position at the level of junior or senior researcher in air pollution epidemiology.
CREAL conducts advanced epidemiologic research on the environmental determinants of human health and its interaction with genetic and other co-factors. The CREAL air pollution research takes a leading role in several local and cross-European projects and consortia, with a particular focus on the chronic effects (respiratory, cardiovascular and fetal and child health) of pollution, and the exogenous and endogenous determinants of environmental susceptibility.
The candidate will have the opportunity to develop an independent new air pollution research agenda fostering interdisciplinary collaborations within CREAL as well as with its local and international partners.
Applications are invited from dynamic researchers with a solid background in air pollution epidemiology and epidemiological methods. Interest in policy relevant research, novel health outcomes of air pollution, or the biologic underpinnings of effects including genetics are an asset of candidates. Excellent knowledge of English is required.
CREAL is a joint initiative of the Government of Catalonia, the Municipal Institute of Medical Research (IMIM) and the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF). CREAL incorporates 13 researchers and a staff of around 80 including postdoctoral and predoctoral researchers, technical assistants and administrative personnel (www.creal.cat/).

Epidemiology International (EI) is looking for an Epidemiologist with an MPH or MS from an accredited university to work as part of a small technical team providing research and consultative services to a range of clients, including the legal profession, the biotech and pharmaceutical industry, academia, and federal agencies. This full-time position is located on-site at our headquarters in Hunt Valley, MD. The successful candidate can start immediately.
Job Summary:
Scientist with strong methodological and analytical skills who provides technical support in the design and implementation of selected EI research and consulting endeavors.
General Responsibilities:
In conjunction with PhD-level epidemiologists, design, plan, and execute research projects.
Perform critical, systematic reviews of the literature and prepare critical summaries.
Analyze and interpret data, write reports, and develop presentations.
Assist in development of research protocols and standard operating procedures, with guidance from PhD-level epidemiologists.
Analyze data and write reports for scientific publication; prepare presentations for scientific meetings.
Assume responsibility for project tasks.
Assist with bid preparation and proposal development.
Provide support in additional areas of EI business, as needed.
Abilities/skills:
Strong background in public health, particularly epidemiologic methods.
Knowledge of statistical software packages such as Stata, SPSS, SAS, etc.
Proficiency in commonly used office computing software and reference management software.
Highly motivated, independent worker with enthusiasm for public health research.
Ability to work independently as well as effectively communicate and collaborate in a team environment.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to adjust to changing priorities and to work in teams.
Strong organization and analytic skills.
Outstanding attention to detail.

EOHSI POSTDOCTORAL EPIDEMIOLOGY RESEARCH POSITIONS
Postdoctoral research positions are available immediately at the Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute (EOHSI), a joint Institute of UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and of Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey
Successful candidates will have a doctorate in epidemiology, a related field, or medicine with epidemiological training. Specific projects include the relationship of shift work to cancer biomarkers, including a related clinical trial, identification and evaluation of environmental risk factors for adverse birth outcomes, study design and analysis using routinely collected surveillance data, and spatial epidemiology.
