ISEE recently submitted comments, prepared by Audrey de Nazelle, David Rojas-Rueda, and Alistair Woodward on WHO’s proposed global action plan for physical activity. WHO requested comments from ISEE in our role as an affiliated NGO. The main recommendations were to broaden the definitions of physical activity to focus on “work, transport, and leisure physical activity”, to enhance the discussion of the benefits and opportunities provided by active travel, to consider the importance of the physical environment where physical activity occurs and the benefits that may or may not co-occur, increased emphasis on rural areas, and expansion of the discussion of blocks to progress, indicators of success, and how success will be monitored or evaluated. The authors also argue that the WHO proposed increase in physical activity was too small, and suggested a 30% increase would be more appropriate.
